The archaeological research has mainly concentrated on the Indus Valley Civilization highlighting the maritime origins of the Indian subcontinent; however, an equally ancient and sophisticated seafaring tradition existed along the southern, eastern, and western coasts of India. This tradition, which dates to prehistoric and Neolithic times, persisted through the Mauryan Empire and the classical Tamil Sangam era. It played a crucial role in transforming the Indian Ocean—referred to as Ratnakara, or the “mine of gems,” in Sanskrit—into a vibrant hub of trans-oceanic trade. Mariners from the peninsula engaged in more than mere coastal navigation; they pioneered innovations in shipbuilding, mastered open-ocean navigation using complex astronomical and meteorological methods, and developed advanced port management and international maritime law. This article examines the technical, economic, administrative, and spiritual dimensions of Indian maritime activities beyond the Indus region from 5000 BCE to nearly100 CE.
Foundations of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Maritime Activities
The origins of Indian Ocean navigation beyond the Indus Basin can be traced to the migration and subsistence patterns of prehistoric and Neolithic communities. Even before the advent of agriculture, coastal populations exploited the resources of the Indian Ocean, gradually acquiring the skills necessary for long-distance ocean voyages.
The earliest documented deep-water crossing in this region is attributed to the Negrito populations of the Stone Age, who successfully traversed the Bay of Bengal from mainland India to the Andaman Islands. This remarkable journey, spanning approximately 700 miles, was accomplished using hollowed-out tree trunks or simple dugouts propelled solely by paddles, demonstrating an impressive feat of early navigation achieved independently of urban Bronze Age development.
By the third millennium BCE, Neolithic and Chalcolithic communities along the eastern coast had established permanent settlements in estuarine regions. Excavations at Golbai Sasan, situated on the north bank of the Malaguni River near Chilika Lake in coastal Odisha, reveal continuous occupation beginning in the Neolithic period, followed by a distinct Chalcolithic phase and an Iron Age culture that commenced around that time.
The discovery of bone harpoons, fishhooks, barbed spears, and net sinkers in the early layers at Golbai Sasan indicates that marine resource exploitation was integral to the local economy at that time. Moreover, the discovery of numerous polished stone woodworking adzes (old, adaptable cutting implements with a blade positioned at a right angle to the handle, resembling a sideways axe) and specialised chisels near Chilika Lake suggests that Golbai Sasan was a significant prehistoric boat-building centre, particularly for the construction of boitas, large traditional vessels, that later facilitated Kalinga’s historical trade with Southeast Asia.
The Bay of Bengal Interaction Sphere
Prehistoric maritime activities along the eastern coast were integral to a broader network known as the Bay of Bengal Interaction Sphere (BBIS). In the earliest Neolithic strata at Golbai Sasan (Period I), archaeologists uncovered handmade pottery with cord markings interspersed with rice husks alongside finely polished stone tools. These artefacts bear a resemblance to Neolithic ceramics and tools discovered in Vietnam and Maritime Southeast Asia. This resemblance suggests that the Bay of Bengal served as an active maritime corridor, facilitating the exchange of ethnic-linguistic groups, agricultural practices, and boat-building traditions across the eastern Indian Ocean during the second and third millennia BCE.
The incorporation of Austroasiatic language elements in early Sanskrit texts is increasingly attributed to these ancient maritime interactions between Southeast Asia and peninsular India. On the western coast, protohistoric maritime activities are evidenced by findings at Dwarka, which emerged as an important centre of Indian maritime trade with the West. Excavations of submerged structures off the coast of Dwarka have uncovered iron tools and large stone anchors associated with deep-draft, ocean-going ships, demonstrating that early Indian mariners possessed the metallurgical expertise necessary to anchor large vessels in challenging tidal conditions. These capabilities enabled Indian sailors to engage in extensive trade in the Arabian Sea. This is corroborated by the discovery of sewn sailing boat remains at the Egyptian Red Sea port of Ayn Sukhna, dating back to the 19th century BCE. These vessels, approximately 20 m in length and constructed using a plank-stitching technique akin to the traditional catamarans and sewn boats of Kerala’s Malabar Coast, could accommodate up to 210 individuals, including 180 sailors and 30 rowers. This evidence substantiates the existence of well-organised Indian Ocean transshipment networks connecting India’s western coast with the Red Sea and Horn of Africa during the early second millennium BCE.
The unique environmental conditions of the Indian Ocean, characterised by strong monsoon winds, significant tidal variations, and shallow river estuaries, prevented ancient Indian shipbuilders from employing the rigid iron-fastened framing methods typical of Mediterranean shipyards. Instead, they developed a flexible, durable, and distinct tradition of sewn plank naval engineering.
A defining feature of ancient Indian shipbuilding was the complete avoidance of iron fasteners in the construction of ship hulls. Planks made from high-quality, rot-resistant local teakwood (Tectona grandis) were placed edge to edge. Holes were drilled along the seams, and the planks were bound together using twisted coconut coir or palm-fibre ropes. To ensure that the hulls were watertight, the seams were filled with a mixture of resin, grass, and animal fat or sealed using natural vegetable glues.
This method of stitched construction had several engineering advantages:
– Shock Absorption: The stitched hulls exhibited significant flexibility. When a ship encounters shifting sandbars at river mouths or navigates rough sea surf, the hull can absorb the energy without sustaining severe damage or leakage.
– Keel Longevity: The absence of iron fasteners prevented the rapid corrosion typically caused by the interaction of iron with warm and salty tropical seawater.
– Ease of Repair: Damaged planks can be swiftly removed, replaced, and re-stitched into the hull using locally available materials at any port.
Shastric Wood Classification and Construction Regulations
The construction of sea vessels adhered to Shastric regulations. These rules, derived from ancient oral traditions, classify wood into four categories based on density, strength, and buoyancy, assigning each to specific structural roles:
– Brahmajati: Wood, which is light, soft, and easy to join was used for interior cabins, decorative prows, and upper deck joints.
– Kshetrajati: Wood, which is light, hard, and resistant to splitting was used for masts, yards, oars, and steering sweeps.
– Vaisyajati: Wood, which is soft and heavy was used for coastal rivercraft and shallow draft barges.
– Sudrajati: Wood, which is very hard, dense, and heavy was used for the main keel, bottom planks, and lower-hull frames.
Additionally, sea vessel designs incorporated specific aesthetic and functional features. Prows were adorned with carvings of animals and deities, such as lions, elephants, buffaloes, serpents, and birds, symbolising the ship’s protectors. Masts and sails were painted in specific colours to indicate the ship’s origin, ownership, or royal patronage.
Toward the end of the first millennium BCE, Indian shipbuilders introduced the Jong (or “junk”) type ship design, which was characterised by curved hulls, multiple decks, flat bottoms, and large rudders. These ships, measuring 50–60 meters in length and accommodating 200–1,000 passengers, employed both traditional Tanja sails (Rectangular or slanted square sails, historically utilized on traditional Austronesian vessels in the Maritime Southeast Asia region), and woven bamboo junk sails to harness the monsoons for year-round ocean voyages.
Sangam classification and Regional Specialisation
In the southern Tamil region (Tamilakam), classical Sangam literature, such as Purananuru and Tolkappiyam, categorises vessels by size, hull shape, and regional use.
– Small/Medium Craft: [Ambi, Otam, Pahri, Punai, Thimil, Thoni]. These vessels were propelled by oars or poles and were used for coastal fishing, river ferry services, and transferring cargo from deep-draft ocean ships to the shore. The Ambi, shaped like an animal head, was used on the rougher Arabian Sea, whereas the Pahri was employed on the calmer Bay of Bengal.
– Large Ocean-Going Ships: [Kalam, Naavaay, Vangkam]. These were multi-decked, multi-masted vessels with large square sails designed for deep-sea navigation and bulk cargo transport across the open ocean. The Naavaay was favoured by Chera kings for Arabian Sea voyages, and the Vangkam, with its fast curved hull, was used for trade with Java and Southeast Asia.
This regional specialisation emerged as a direct consequence of coastal geography. On India’s western coast, facing the turbulent Arabian Sea, robust, high-sided ships such as Naavaay and Ambi were essential. Conversely, the eastern coast, adjacent to the calmer Bay of Bengal, preferred sleek, fast-sailing vessels like the Pahri and Vangkam, adept at navigating the intricate deltaic estuaries of the Kaveri and Ganges. Foreign powers acknowledged the technical expertise of these shipbuilders. In 326 BCE, when Alexander the Great reached the rivers of Punjab, he employed local Indian shipbuilders and workers to construct his entire river fleet, comprising several hundred vessels, to traverse the Hydaspes (modern day Jhelum) and Indus rivers, relying solely on their indigenous engineering skills.
Estuarine and Coastal Ports of the Peninsular Coast
The coastline of peninsular India is interspersed with a network of ancient ports, which early geographers categorised into coastal harbours directly facing the open sea (Pattana) and sheltered estuarine harbours at the mouths of navigable rivers (Dronimukha).
The Eastern Seaboard (Bay of Bengal)
The ports along the eastern coast served as primary entry points for trade with Southeast Asia, China and Ceylon.
– Tamralipti: Situated on the Ganges delta in West Bengal, Tamralipti was the foremost northern port of the Mauryan Empire. It linked the water routes of the Ganges with the land routes of Uttarapatha. The port was renowned for exporting fine textiles, terracotta art, and agricultural surpluses, and it was the departure point for diplomatic and religious missions dispatched by Emperor Ashoka to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia to spread Buddhism.
– Palur (Dantapura): Located in coastal Kalinga (Odisha) near Chilika Lake, Palur was a significant estuarine port (Dronimukha). It functioned as a deep-water harbour where large ships from across the subcontinent paused to replenish their fresh water and supplies before embarking on open-ocean voyages across the Bay of Bengal.
– Arikamedu (Podouke): Positioned on the Ariyankuppam River estuary south of modern Pondicherry, Arikamedu was one of the most active industrial and commercial ports on the Coromandel Coast. While early archaeologists, such as Sir Mortimer Wheeler, proposed that Arikamedu was a short-lived Roman trading colony established in the 1st century CE, Vimala Begley’s revised excavations demonstrated that the port had a long pre-Augustan history, with active maritime trade dating back to earlier periods. Arikamedu operated as a large export-oriented manufacturing hub, producing millions of Indo-Pacific glass beads, worked gemstones (carnelian, agate, amethyst), and indigo-dyed textiles for Roman and Southeast Asian markets.
– Kaveripattinam (Poompuhar): Located at the mouth of the Kaveri River, this Chola port is celebrated in the epic Silappatikaram. It featured extensive brick docks, warehouses, and open-air terraces where imported Yavana gold, Mediterranean wine, and local agricultural products were processed under the royal supervision.
– Korkai: Situated in the Gulf of Mannar under the Pandyan dynasty, Korkai was the centre of an ancient pearl fishery {For thousands of years, the pearl fisheries in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Mannar (situated between India and Sri Lanka), and the Red Sea were extremely profitable maritime ventures}. The Pandyan rulers maintained a royal monopoly over these pearl beds, which produced some of the most valuable pearls in the ancient world.
The Western Seaboard (Arabian Sea)
The Western Seaboard served as a vital link between the agriculturally and gemologically rich regions of the Deccan and the Western Ghats and the areas of the Red Sea, East Africa, and the Persian Gulf.
– Muziris (Pattanam): Situated in the Periyar River delta in Kerala, Muziris was the principal port of the Chera dynasty. Excavations at Pattanam have uncovered numerous fragments of Mediterranean amphorae, Terra Sigillata (Arretine ware), Roman glass, and Chera copper coins. The Roman map Tabula Peutingeriana identifies Muziris, depicting a nearby lake (Lucus Muziris) and a Temple of Augustus, suggesting the presence of Western merchants (Yavanas).
– Sopara (Nallasopara): Located on Maharashtra’s Konkan coast, Sopara was a significant port during the Mauryan and Satavahana dynasties. The discovery of Ashokan rock edicts at Sopara underscores its importance as a centre for exporting teakwood, cotton, and iron tools to the West.
– Barygaza (Bharuch): Positioned at the Narmada River estuary in Gujarat, Barygaza was the primary northern port on the western coast of India. It served as a crucial market town, aggregating cotton textiles, semi-precious stones (agate and carnelian), and metals from northern and central India for export to the Roman and Persian Empires.
Lighthouses, Professional Piloting, and Navigation Markers
Sangam Era Lighthouses (“Kalangarai Vilakkam”)
During the Sangam Period, traditionally dated from approximately 300 BCE to 300 CE, the Tamil dynasties of the Cheras, Cholas, and Pandyas played a crucial role in the establishment of coastal lighthouses, referred to as Kalangarai Vilakkam. In ancient Tamil, Kalangarai Vilakkam translates to “the beacon light that calls ships to shore.” These structures were constructed as tall towers using bricks or stones and were strategically located on prominent headlands and at river mouths. Large wood fires or heavy oil lamps were maintained atop these towers throughout the night to aid foreign ships, alert them to dangerous coastlines, and mitigate the risk of maritime accidents. Sangam literature, including works such as the epic Silappadhikaram and the poems of Perumpanarrupadai, provide detailed descriptions of these towers. At the thriving port of Poompuhar (Kaveripattinam), which flourished from around 200 BCE, a grand and ornate lighthouse served as a navigational aid for international merchant ships arriving from Rome, Greece, Egypt, and Southeast Asia.
Professional Piloting and the Supparaka Jataka:The navigation of merchant ships through tumultuous seas required distinct human expertise, as exemplified in the Buddhist Jataka tales originating in the mid-1st millennium BCE. The Supparaka Jātaka narrates the tale of Supparaka, a legendary pilot from Bharukaccha (present-day Bharuch), a prominent western port. Despite losing his sight partially due to prolonged exposure to salt water, Supparaka’s profound understanding of oceanography and navigation allowed him to guide vessels safely through treacherous waters. By interpreting various “signs of the ocean”, such as water textures, colours, underwater currents, and marine life, he skilfully avoided shallow sandbanks and hidden rocks. This oral and experiential “navigational database” was passed down through hereditary pilot guilds to prevent future shipwrecks.
State-Run Pilot Fleets of Barygaza (Gulf of Khambhat): The approach to Barygaza (Bharuch), a major western port, was notorious for its rapid tidal bores (A striking natural event occurs when the forefront of an incoming tide creates a powerful wave or “wall” of water that swiftly moves up a river or narrow bay, opposing the river’s usual flow), rocky river passages, and dangerous shifting shoals. To mitigate these hazards, local authorities instituted a state-operated harbour pilotage service, as documented in the 1st-century CE text Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. Large, multi-oared state vessels, known as trappaga and cotymba, were permanently stationed at the entrance of the gulf. Skilled local fishermen manned these pilot boats, meeting incoming foreign merchant ships and physically towing them past perilous reefs and shoals to ensure safe passage to the river berths.
Coastal Temples and Monuments as Navigation Markers: During the early historic period, prominent coastal temples and monuments constructed on high cliffs served dual purposes. In addition to their religious significance, these tall stone structures functioned as crucial day markers and visual land indicators for sailors navigating the Indian peninsula. For example, early shrines dedicated to Varuna (the sea deity) or protective local goddesses were strategically positioned on prominent headlands, providing sailors with visible reference points to avoid shallow waters and locate safe harbour entry points.
Maritime Trade Routes and Global Transshipment Networks
Peninsular India’s strategic location established it as a central hub for transshipment in the ancient Indian Ocean, linking the commercial systems of the Mediterranean and Western Asia with those of East Asia and the South China Sea.
The Indo-Roman and Red Sea Corridors
The western maritime route across the Arabian Sea directly connected Indian ports with the Red Sea ports of Egypt (Arsinoe, Myos Hormos, and Berenice) and the Persian Gulf. Vessels departed from Indian ports such as Muziris and Barygaza in late autumn, utilising the retreating northeast monsoon to navigate westward toward Arabia and the Red Sea, and returned to India in late spring. The return journey, laden with Roman gold, olive oil, and wine, commenced from the Red Sea in the summer, employing the strong southwest monsoon (the West Wind, or Hypalus) to reach Muziris in approximately forty days. The magnitude of this trade was substantial. Historian Strabo records that during Augustus’s reign, up to 120 ships sailed annually from the Egyptian Red Sea port of Myos Hormos to India, marking a significant increase from the Ptolemaic era. The diverse nature of this trade is evidenced by archaeological findings at Quseir el-Quadim (Myos Hormos), where excavations have revealed ostraca and pottery fragments inscribed in Tamil-Brahmi, alongside Greek, Latin, South Arabian, Nabataic, and Palmyrene.
Kalinga and Southeast Asian Expansion
The eastern trade routes across the Bay of Bengal facilitated connections between the ports of Kalinga, Bengal, and Southeast Asia. As early as the 4th century BCE, sailors from Kalinga established consistent trade links with the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java and Bali. This trade network was systematically organized, with ships departing from Tamralipti and Palur during the summer monsoon, navigating along the Burmese coast to the Nicobar Islands, and subsequently passing through the Strait of Malacca. By the 2nd century BCE, Kalinga had forged enduring political and commercial relationships with Southeast Asia. Historically, coastal Burma was referred to as Kalingarat (Kalinga Rastra), and Buddhist traders from Kalinga were instrumental in introducing Buddhism and early Indian script systems into the region. This maritime interaction is commemorated in the traditional Odia festival of Boita Bandana (or Bali Jatra), which continues to celebrate Kalinga’s historic voyages to Bali and Java. Pliny’s “Natural History” underscores the strong Roman demand for Indian gemstones, noting the Roman elite’s “marvellous fondness” for Indian beryls (colourful silicate minerals). Pliny describes how Indian artisans crafted these stones, favouring beryls worn in an elongated, cylindrical form and strung on elephant bristles rather than set in heavy gold, which would diminish the stone’s natural clarity. He also observed that Indian craftsmen had mastered the art of replicating precious beryls by artificially colouring common rock crystals, marking an early advancement in chemical and material technologies.
State Policy, Maritime Bureaucracy, and the Military-Commercial Balance
The expansion of peninsular maritime trade was not merely a series of uncoordinated merchant activities; it was actively regulated, taxed, and protected by well-structured policies. However, a distinct policy divergence existed between the centralised, bureaucratic administration of the northern Mauryan Empire and the direct commercial alliances of the southern peninsular kingdoms.
The Mauryan Bureaucracy and Kautilyan Maritime Law
The Mauryan Empire established a highly centralised state bureaucracy to oversee maritime and river activities. Codified in Kautilya’s Arthashastra, the state formed a dedicated navigation department led by the Navadhyaksha (Superintendent of Ships). The responsibilities of the Navadhyaksha were extensive, encompassing tax collection, safety regulation, port maintenance, and naval defence.
– Harbour and Canal Inspection: The Navadhyaksha was tasked with inspecting and maintaining all waterways, including backwaters, river estuaries, natural and artificial lakes and canals.
– Taxation and Duties: The department imposed custom duties (shulka) on all merchant vessels that docked at state ports. Passengers on state-owned vessels were charged a passage fare (yatra-vetana), and fishermen were required to pay a portion of their daily catch as tax to fish in state-controlled waters.
– Personnel Management: The Superintendent was responsible for staffing state-owned merchant vessels (mahanavah) with a qualified crew, including a captain (shasaka), steersman or navigator (niyamaka), and specialised crew members to manage the sails, rigging, and water bailing.
– Anti-Piracy Operations: The Mauryan state maintained a standing navy to actively eliminate pirate vessels, which were legally classified as Himsrika (destroyers of trade).
– Shipwreck and Custom Relief: Under Mauryan law, the state was obligated to assist if a merchant ship suffered damage due to a natural disaster or a storm. This assistance included providing immediate aid, recovering cargo, and offering tax exemptions to facilitate the merchant’s recovery. The primary aim was to enhance state revenue through the regulation of trade. However, during Emperor Ashoka’s reign, there was a significant shift in Mauryan maritime policy. Ashoka utilised sea routes for diplomatic and religious purposes, as evidenced by the journey of his son, Mahendra, and daughter, Sanghamitra, who departed from the port of Tamralipti to Ceylon with a sacred Bodhi tree sapling and Buddhist texts, establishing a lasting cultural and religious connection between the Mauryan Empire and the rulers of Sri Lanka.
Southern Dynastic Policies: Chera, Chola, and Pandya
In the southern Tamil region, the maritime strategies of the Chera, Chola, and Pandya dynasties involved direct royal investment, naval protection, and collaboration with foreign traders. Unlike the Mauryas, who employed a complex bureaucracy, the Southern rulers exercised direct control over key ports, accruing wealth from customs duties and royal monopolies.
– Chera Policy: Chera rulers, such as Kuttuvan, deployed their navy to protect the waters surrounding Muziris, safeguarding merchant fleets from pirates along the Konkan Coast. They also established strong alliances with Western traders (Yavanas), permitting them to establish warehouses and settlements in exchange for customs revenue and gold imports.
– Pandyan Policy: The Pandyan rulers maintained a strict monopoly over the pearl fisheries in Korkai. Pearl diving was tightly regulated, with the finest pearls reserved for the royal treasury, while the remainder was sold to international traders to attract foreign gold to the country.
– The Magadha Navy: The Magadha kingdom established the region’s first state navy in the northeast. This naval force controlled the Ganges Delta and secured river trade routes, establishing a military presence prior to the Mauryan maritime administration.
These state involvements contrast with the conservative socio-religious edicts of the Manusmriti. While the Manusmriti prohibited crossing open seas (Samudrayana), asserting that individuals (particularly Brahmins) who did so lost their ritual purity and caste status, evidence indicates that Indian states, merchant guilds, and mariners frequently engaged in transoceanic trade.
Navigational Astronomy and Sky Mapping
Ancient Indian sailors possessed a deep understanding of astronomy and employed the night sky for oceanic navigation in the absence of physical maps. For the seafaring communities along the Malabar Coast, the sky was meticulously observed.
– Dhruva Tara (North Star): This star served as a constant and reliable reference point for determining latitude and maintaining a steady course.
– Sirius and Orion: The positions of these stars signalled seasonal changes, alerting sailors to the onset of winter or winding down of of violent southwest monsoon winds.
– Saptarishi (Ursa Major): This constellation of seven sages serves as a dependable guide for finding the Pole Star.
– Arundhati and Vasistha: This binary star pair is utilized for accurately setting the course for navigation.
– Rohini: The sighting of this star marks the safe start of the sailing season.
– Agastya (Canopus): An essential guiding star in the southern hemisphere, it was used by ancient mariners journeying to Southeast Asia.
In instances where stars were obscured by clouds or monsoon fog, sailors resorted to biological navigation using Disha-kaka (shore-sighting or homing birds). Navigators carried land birds such as crows and frigatebirds on board. If they suspected proximity to land but lacked visual confirmation, they released the bird. If the bird flew away and did not return, the captain followed its trajectory, realising that it was heading toward the coast. Conversely, if the bird returned, it indicated the absence of nearby land, prompting the ship to remain in deep water to avoid the reefs.
Maritime References in Epic Literature and Sacred Texts
The extensive maritime activities of peninsular India are reflected in its literary traditions, indicating that seafaring was an integral component of the ancient cultural and imaginative landscape of the region.
Vedic Literature. The Rigveda references early deep-sea navigation in India, employing the term “samudra” to denote the vast oceans beyond the Seven Rivers (Sapta Sindhu).
-The Rescue of Bhujyu: A notable maritime narrative in the Rigveda concerns Bhujyu, the son of King Tugra. His vessel was wrecked in the deep sea, described as a place with “no support, no take, no grab.” The divine twins, the Ashvins, rescued him using a “hundred-oared boat” (sataritram navam or sataritara) that moved swiftly like a bird. This narrative illustrates that Vedic societies possessed knowledge of large-scale naval designs and coordinated navigation.
-Varuna’s Oceanic Paths: Varuna, the Vedic deity of cosmic order and the seas, is extolled in the Rigveda for his knowledge of the “paths of the boats in the sea” (navah samudriyah), suggesting that early sailors utilised established sea routes for trade,
The Epics: Ramayana and Mahabharata both depict naval warfare, maritime trade, and coastal geography.
-Varuna and Rama: In the Ramayana, when Sita, Rama’s wife, is abducted across the sea to Lanka, Rama prays to the ocean god Varuna for safe passage. When Varuna does not respond immediately, Rama employs celestial arrows to dry up parts of the sea in anger. Varuna eventually appears, requesting Rama to assist in cleansing the ocean depths of pollutants in exchange for safe passage, thus reflecting the complex relationship between humans and the sea.

In Hindu cosmology, the earth is depicted as a unified domain known as Bhu-mandala, encircled by seven concentric islands and seven oceans, each composed of a unique liquid. Beyond these tangible cosmic layers is the primordial ocean of milk, where Lord Vishnu reclines on the cosmic serpent Adishesha. The Samudra Manthan, or the Churning of the Ocean, functions as both a spiritual and economic allegory for ancient maritime communities.
